Alan Pardew could take another look at Victor Ibarbo during the World Cup with previous target Diego Perotti set to sign for Genoa in Serie A.
Newcastle United’s pursuit of a new winger could see the club look to Cagliari’s Victor Ibarbo, after a move for Sevilla’s Diego Perotti was seemingly rebuffed by the player.
The 25-year-old had been linked with a move to St James’ Park having impressed in La Liga over the past five seasons and was reportedly available for as little as £3.5 million this summer.
However it would appear that the midfielder has opted against a move to the Premier League, with reports indicating that Perotti is all set to sign for Serie A club Genoa, as the Italian club looks to kick-on following an indifferent season in which they flirted with relegation.
The decision is a blow to Alan Pardew, who had hoped to recruit the Argentine as part of a major overhaul of the Magpies playing staff, as the club aims to improve on last season’s mid-table finish.
But the World Cup in Brazil could provide Newcastle with a glimpse of one viable alternative in the form of Victor Ibarbo, who is currently in action for Colombia.
Used in Los Cafeteros’ first two group games, Ibarbo is known for his pace and passing abilities and could prove the ideal foil for Papiss Cisse.
Newcastle had previously been linked with a £8.25 million bid for the winger and after seeing their pursuit of Perotti end in failure, while Ibarbo has impressed at the World Cup, this is a deal that could soon be resurrected.
Whatever the case, Toon fans look set for a busy summer of ins and outs at St James’ Park with the club already recruiting Jack Colback and Ayoze Perez.
They have also been linked with moves for Red Bull Salzburg’s Jonathan Soriano and Burnley’s Danny Ings.
