Having coasted through Group G with two wins and a draw, Germany were heavily fancied heading into their last 16 tie with Algeria, who were the last African team left standing after Nigeria's exit earlier in the day. Joachim Loew's side didn't have it all their own way though, as Algeria regularly posed a threat to Manuel Neuer's goal, and defended stubbornly to take the game to extra time.
It didn't take long for Germany to make the breakthrough though, as Chelsea's Ander Schurrle broke Algeria's resistance, before Ozil got the second in the 119th minute. Algeria did pull back a goal through Abdelmoumene Djabou, but it wasn't enough to stop Germany setting up a clash with France this Friday.
Ozil is under plenty of pressure to perform on the world's biggest stage having underwhelmed with Arsenal this season, and whilst he scored the second goal tonight, it wasn't his finest showing by any means. He continues to look like a shadow of the play that dazzled at the last World Cup and with Real Madrid before his £42.5m move to the Emirates Stadium last summer.
Many Arsenal fans on Twitter were expecting better from their star playmaker, with some worrying that he may never rediscover the form that made him such a dangerous player with Real Madrid.
Any other Gooners really concerned with Mesut Ozil's play? No pace. No precision. No creativity. He better shape up before August. #afc— Ian Grubman (@IRGrubsy) June 30, 2014
