Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos has become one of the most coveted men in world football in recent weeks and months. The German international has been in superb form at the World Cup and also had an excellent season at Bayern. However, his contract expires in 2015 and he is reportedly ready for a fresh challenge.
In England the main interest has of course come from Manchester United and Chelsea. United appeared to be the favourites for his signature for many a month, but the arrival of Ander Herrera would likely dispel any chance of this deal happening. Meanwhile Jose Mourinho wanted Kroos as another midfield option, with either Oscar or Ramires to then depart Stamford Bridge.
However, it appeared this morning that both would have to look elsewhere - after Marca reported that Kroos was Real Madrid bound.
Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is a big fan of the player and reports this morning suggested Kroos had agreed personal terms and would be joining Los Merengues on a five-year deal worth €5 million a season.
Big news, especially if you wanted to see Kroos at your club this campaign.
But the good news now ... as this deal is nowhere near done, in fact, according to Kroos' agent, it is not even on the table.
"There is no agreement, neither Real Madrid nor with another club. Toni is currently playing a World Cup that an absolute priority. Before this is not over, there will be no news. "
So Kroos is not going anywhere yet, and Bayern are still keen to keep him at the club for another season - even willing to let him leave on a free transfer rather than sell him to a rival.
However, don't expect Real Madrid to go back to the shadows. Kroos still looks more likely to join the La Liga side than anybody else.
