Mexico player ratings v Netherlands: Ex-Spurs players goal not enough

A 94th minute Klaas Jan Huntelaar penalty was enough to send the Netherlands through to the quarter finals of the World Cup at the expense of Mexico.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovanni Dos Santos scored a lovely goal in the 48th minute to give Mexico a 1-0 lead in the heat of Fortaleza.

Just when it looked like the Netherlands were going out, Wesley Sneijder equalised in the 88th minute with a powerful strike into the corner from the edge of the area.

Then drama struck again, Arjen Robben was fouled by Mexico captain Rafael Marquez in the penalty area, and Klaas Jan Huntelaar calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, to send the dutch into the last eight and leave Mexico heartbroken.

Here are the player ratings for Mexico:

Guillermo Ochoa - 8

This free agent was outstanding again, and had a superb World Cup. His safe from De Vrij in the second half onto the post was by far the save of the tournament so far.

Francisco Rodriguez - 7

Looked solid in defence, managed to maintain Sneijder who often appeared around his positin on the right hand side.

Rafael Marquez (c) - 7

Played brilliantly in the first half, often winning the ball and stepping forward into midfield with ease. Struggled as the match wore on when left isolated defending Robben, his lack of pace showed.

Carlos Salcido - 7

Kept Van Persie quiet, often forcing the Manchester United striker out wide to collect the ball in space, thus sending him away from goal.

Miguel Layun - 7

Provided a lot of energy in the early stages bringing the ball forward from his left back position, delivering dangerous crosses. Attacking threat diminished though as the match wore on.

Hector Moreno - 7

Got himself on the ball well, looked to cause danger in doing so and not allow the dutch midfield to dominate proceedings in the heat, did well in doing that.

Andres Guardado - 7

Plenty o energy in closing down the Netherlands players, real engine in the Mexico midfield, looked tired though as the match wore on.

Hector Herrera - 7

Didn't have as an effective match as he had been during the group stages of the tournament. Still linked up well with Oribe Peralta.

Giovanni Dos Santos - 7

Took his goal brilliantly when he thumped in the ball from 30 yards out. Didn't have much of an impact elsewhere and was taken off after 61 minutes.

Paul Aguilar - 7

Defended well for his side from set pieces, especially marking Van Persie. Played with tempo in pressing the Dutch in the first half.

Oribe Peralta - 7

Linked well with Herrera, held up the ball well for his side in the heat. Ran down the channels of the Dutch defence and stretched them.

Diego Reyes - 7

Come on for Hector Moreno at half time, played well in the second half, little impact though.

Javier Aquino - 6

Come on for Giovanni Dos Santos after 61 minutes, at fault for Sneijder's equaliser when he left the midfielder unmarked on the edge of the area.

Javier Hernandez - 6

Come on for Oribe Peralta after 75 minutes, looked to hold up the ball but didn't do it well enough for his side when they were looking to waste time.
