Manchester United could being Nico Gaitan to the club after all according to the latest report from Portugal.
Portuguese newspaper Record claims United remain interested in the Argentine winger and that they are in negotiations with his current side Benfica, but that Louis van Gaal is yet to decide if he definitely wants the 26-year-old.
The report comes as something of a surprise given that just 24 hours earlier rival publication O Jogo claimed Gaitan was close to a move to Zenit St Petersburg.
Now it is being claimed Gaitan and Bebe could be involved in a player-plus-cash deal, following the latter’s impressive campaign on loan in the Primeira Liga last season.
Few expected Bebe to be given much, if any, game-time by van Gaal despite the winger’s good form for Pacos de Ferreira. And if the latest report is true it seems he could impact United’s summer business, permanently returning to his homeland and seeing a much-needed left-winger heading in the opposite direction.
Gaitan has long been linked with United, and with Ashley Young flattering to deceive in recent times, a new left-sided player is seen as a necessity despite the impressive signings already completed by the club this summer.
Gaitan scored seven goals for Benfica last season and set up a further 10, while Bebe has been hailed by many in Portugal after scoring 14 goals on loan and prompting some to suggest he deserved a World Cup call-up.
