Third signing close? United ‘agree personal terms’ with Thomas Vermaelen; £11m fee could reportedly be enough

It is being claimed that Manchester United have agreed terms with Thomas Vermaelen over a potential move from Arsenal to Old Trafford.

Manchester United are on the verge of completing a deal for Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen according to Talk Sport reporter Warren Haughton.

Reports last week suggested United had offered around £6million for the Belgian defender, who is in the final year of his contract at the Gunners.

It was later claimed Arsenal were looking for double that fee. But speaking on Talk Sport on Saturday morning, Houghton claimed United could get their man for a fee in the region of £10-11million.

“Arsenal are ready to let Thomas Vermaelen move on,” Houghton said.

“The deal would cost Manchester United around £10-11million. My understanding is that personal terms have been agreed with Manchester United, the clubs just need to agree a transfer fee.”

If the latest claims are true, it seems Louis van Gaal could soon have his third new arrival in a matter of days.

The Dutchman certainly needs at least one new centre-back this summer, following the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. And given his experience in the Premier League and versatility, Vermaelen could be a very canny buy.

For now it remains just a rumour; but the way the rumours have become reality for United in recent days, it would not be a surprise if they soon had their third summer signing in the bag.
