Manchester United now have two top left-backs battling for one position - so what does the newbie think about his battle with Evra.
Manchester United completed their second big signing of the week yesterday, their second in consecutive days.
They followed up the signing of Ander Herrera with the arrival of Luke Shaw from Southampton - on a fee that made the England international the most expensive teenager in world football.
Before the deal was announced however many questioned the transfer fee, not least because it is quite extortionate, but also because they have only recently handed a proven international left-back a new deal at the club.
Patrice Evra is still a class act, even if 2013-14 was not his best campaign at Old Trafford. However he is in his 30's and the club recently allowed Alex Buttner to discuss a move to Dinamo Moscow. A year ago they tried to sign Leighton Baines from Everton - so the hunt for a left-back is nothing new.
So what does Shaw think about facing off against Evra for the starting spot?
He has been speaking to United's official website after completing the move, insisting he is not afraid of the challenge and that he is excited to learn from the experienced French defender:
“I’m really excited to be working with him. He’s been one of the best left-backs in the league for the last few years now and it’s something that I’m looking forward to, to be training with him. Hopefully, I can learn a lot from him.”
Knowing Evra for the battling star that he is, Shaw should not expect to walk into the starting spot - even though the rumour mill is describing Shaw as the future starting left-back.
But at least he sounds up for the challenge.
