Despite previously being linked with a move to Liverpool, Benfica's Nico Gaitan could instead be off to Zenit St Petersburg this summer.

Reported Liverpool target Nicolas Gaitan could follow Ezequiel Garay to Zenit St Petersburg according to a report.

The Argentine winger was said to be on the Reds radar, but Portuguese newspaper O Jogo claims that after it was confirmed Garay would be swapping Benfica for Russia, his teammate could do the same.

Gaitan made 42 appearances for Benfica last season, scoring seven goals and setting up a further 10 in that time. But with reports claiming Adam Lallana is close to a £25million move to Anfield, it seems the Reds are no longer in need of another left-sided midfielder.

If that is the case, and the latest report is true, Zenit could soon bring in another Argentine player who would vastly improve Andre Villas-Boas’s side.

Gaitan has been linked with a whole host of English clubs in the past, including Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United; and while both those clubs may still be on the look-out of new left-wingers, the Reds appear to have solved the particular problem by moving for the Southampton man.

Lallana outscored Gaitan last season, netting 10 goals in 42 appearances, although he set up two less.

With both players 26 and able to confidently play across the midfield when required, it may well have been Lallana’s Premier League experience that tilted the balance if, of course, Liverpool were ever truly interested in the man now reportedly destined for a stint in Russia.
