Jan Aage Fjortoft is now a succesful journalist specialising in the Bundesliga, which means he is well qualified to speak on the qualities of a number of German-based players linked with Premier League moves.
One such star is Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos, who has long been linked with a potential move to Manchester United - with Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid also reportedly interested in more recent times.
While Kroos's future remains unknown, following his reported refusal to sign a new contract at the Allianz Arena and Bayern's apparent desire to keep him for as long as they can, it appears Fjortoft rates him extremely highly.
Following the news that Luke Shaw had joined United for a fee in excess of £30million, the former footballer took to Twitter to suggest that if the young England international warranted such a fee, Kroos could be worth 10 times as much.
Of course Fjortoft was being somewhat playful as no one truly believes Kroos - or any player for that matter - is worth such an amount. But it illustrates yet again that English clubs seeking young homegrown talent must pay through the nose for them.
Luckily for United, in the case of Shaw they are likely to get their money's worth.
Luke Shaw: Talented left-back.18yrs. 3 caps England = 30 mill pounds IF Toni Kroos: 24 yrs. 47 caps Germany. XY titles = 300 mill pounds?— Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) June 27, 2014
While questioning the Shaw fee, Fjortoft did go on to suggest that if United signed Arturo Vidal and at least one new centre-back, they would immediately be back near the summit of English football.
And the way they have been conducting their summer transfer business so far, do not be surprise if more new arrivals are announced sooner rather than later.
If Man UTD get Vidal (brilliant) and at least one central defender, they will be back up there straight away.Van Persie back to 30 goals too— Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) June 27, 2014
