Ander Herrera has become Manchester United’s first summer signing, and he is a real coup.
The 24-year-old is one of the best central midfielders in Europe. Herrera’s skills on the ball are superb and his creative abilities exquisite, and he can also break up opposition’s play.
Herrera is not the finished article yet, but he is certainly on his way to becoming one of the most complete midfielders in the world.
The disastrous 2013-14 season under the now-sacked David Moyes exposed United’s problems in midfield, and Herrera’s arrival is certainly going to be a great help to new manager Louis van Gaal.
The Red Devils were in the market for Herrera last summer and finally they have got their man.
Outgoing United defender Rio Ferdinand is delighted with the arrival of Herrera and believes that the Spaniard will succeed, but only if he works hard.
Ferdinand’s message to Herrera will ring true for all the United players who are currently at the club or those who will be signed.
The Manchester outfit are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have great facilities and personnel, but it is down to the players themselves to make the most out of it.
Herrera has got the talent and the fact that he himself helped pay his buyout clause means that he was determined to move to United, irrespective of the fact that the Red Devils are not in the Champions League next season while Athletic Bilbao could be (Los Leones finished fourth in La Liga in 2013-14 so they will first have to get through the playoff round).
But as Ferdinand says, unless Herrera works hard, he will not succeed.
