President Barack Obama has congratulated the USA football team after they reached the knockout stages of the 2014 World Cup.
The United States lost 1-0 to Germany on Thursday, but advanced from Group G nonetheless as Portugal could only beat Ghana 2-1.
"I have to begin by congratulating our US soccer team, Team USA, for advancing to the next round of the World Cup," said Obama.
He added: "We've still got a chance to win the World Cup and we could not be prouder of them. They are defying the odds and earning a lot of believers in the process."
The United States opened their World Cup campaign with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Ghana, before drawing 2-2 with Portugal to put themselves in a great position to advance.
The USA would have qualified after just two games had they not conceded a last-gasp equaliser to Silvestre Varela against Portugal.
A point against Germany would see the USA through, however, but after losing 1-0, they were relying on the result in the other match. Portugal's narrow win meant Jurgen Klinsmann's men qualified on goal difference.
Now the US face Group H winners Belgium in the round of 16. The Red Devils have been largely unimpressive in this tournament, but managed to grind out three victories in the group stage.
