Manchester United's potential side for next season based on current players and possible new signings.
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal owes Ed Woodward a favour, as United have closed out a deal for Ander Herrera with a move for Luke Shaw imminent.
United’s Dutch coach hasn’t even walked into his Old Trafford office yet and he’s already shaping the side for next season, with further signings likely once the transfer window opens after the World Cup.
Here’s what LvG’s starting Manchester United side could look like next season.
GK – David De Gea
De Gea is safe in the number one spot. He had a quiet World Cup but will be fresh having not played.
RB – Rafael
Rafael could be given an extended chance to settle down at right-back. LvG may be reluctant to change all parts of his defence.
CB – Phil Jones
Jones’ best position is at centre-back and he should focus on his consistency, which let him down last season.
CB – Thomas Vermaelen
A deal for someone like Mats Hummels would be more popular with Manchester United fans but Vermaelen is an experienced Premier League defender and a leader.
LB – Luke Shaw
Shaw could be United’s left-back for the next ten years. If he impresses the boss after signing, he could start ahead of Patrice Evra.
RM – Antonio Valencia
LvG’s decision to commission a new deal for Valencia is a sign that the Dutchman has faith in him. Don’t be surprised to see him controlling the left hand side.
CM – Marouane Fellaini
Fellaini’s decent World Cup so far may convince LvG that he should start in the middle of the team. He can be a disruptive influence defensively and a threat going forward.
CM – Ander Herrera
Herrera may be the man that LvG urges to sit in the middle of the team and pull the strings.
AM – Juan Mata
Mata is likely to be pushed further forward, playing in behind the main striker as the number ten.
LM – Wayne Rooney
Rooney has to fit into the side somewhere and he could feature on the left, moving into central positions when Shaw gets forward and United are on top in games.
ST – Robin Van Persie
RVP has cashed in during the World Cup and there’s every chance he’ll be United’s main man up front.
