But despite a promising start to his Gunners career, including an excellent double-brace against Liverpool, he went on to struggle with the rigours of English football.
He joined former club Zenit St Petersburg on a two-year deal, the team he left in 2009 to become an Arsenal player.
Chelsea sold Dutch starlet Jeffrey Bruma to PSV Eindhoven. The Netherlands international was once dubbed the 'next John Terry' after impressing as a youngster at the club.
His deal hit a snag, after his medical highlighted a minor heart defect, but it did not prove to be career threatening.
The four-year deal however does include a buyback clause for the player. However, Bruma does not look like returning to Chelsea despite going on to become a regular at PSV.
A sign to many of Chelsea's youngsters that a permanent move might be the best option.
