Balague: David Moyes did not feel Herrera was worth €36m

David Moyes Interview - 23/02/2014

New Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal clearly disagrees.

Ander Herrera has sealed a €36 million switch to Manchester United, at the second time of asking.

The Red Devils came close to signing him last summer, making enquiries in the build-up to transfer deadline day, and ultimately leaving it too late.

So why did they not pursue him earlier, was he a panic target? The fact United have pursued him this summer shows he was highly valued and recommended by the scouting department despite the change in manager.

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague wrote in his column for Bleacher Report yesterday that Louis van Gaal's predecessor was never convinced about Herrera.

"Herrera was convinced he was on his way to Old Trafford. He was not amused when the deal fell flat, but the truth of the matter was that David Moyes did not feel Herrera was worth the €36 million on his buyout clause."

Moyes did however spend £27.5 million on Marouane Fellaini, which equates to €34.4 million. With the benefit of hindsight, it was not a wise move as the Belgian turned out to be one of the big disappointments of the Premier League season.

In fairness to the Scotsman, the fee paid for Herrera is a lot, for a player without a senior international cap who has never played Champions League football.

Yet those facts do not account for the talent in Spain's squad and his pedigree at youth level, nor his impressive displays with Bilbao en route to the Europa League Final in 2012.

Had Moyes been truly convinced on Herrera, he would have moved on him far sooner than he did last summer. This time around Louis van Gaal has wasted little time, and acted promptly, signing off on the deal before he takes on the job full-time.

There are dozens of 'what-if's likely to be going through Moyes' mind on a daily basis regarding his spell in charge at United; next season he is going to get to see one play out for real, and it could be agonising viewing for him.
