To be played on Thursday 26th June 2014 at 21:00. Venue: Arena Pernambuco, Recife
Odds: USA 9/1, Draw 19/10, Germany 8/13
Preview & injury news
These two would have both been through by now if they weren’t held to draws in their previous games. Germany played in what was one of the games of the tournament when they drew 2-2 with Ghana, while the USA were literally within a minute of qualifying when Cristiano Ronaldo, who had done nothing all game, produced the cross of the tournament for Silvestre Varela to equalise.
Germany looked really impressive in their 4-0 win against Portugal but struggled against Ghana. It took Miroslav Klose his 15th goal in a World Cup finals to help them gain a point, equalling Ronaldo’s record in the process. With no certainties, they won’t sit back and will do all they can to beat the USA and secure top spot.
Having said that, if the two sides draw, then they will both go through - Germany will win the group because of a better goal difference. With the USA being a real surprise package so far at this World Cup, they won’t just sit back and take a beating - they will take the game to the Germans, but this could be dangerous.
1) Miroslav Klose can become the World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer with 16 goals if he can bag one against the USA.
2) Clint Dempsey has the opportunity to increase his goal tally for the USA. He is currently ranked second with 39 goals in 109 appearances, 18 behind Landon Donovan.
3) Germany have only lost one out of 25 World Cup group games, while USA have only kept two clean sheets in the same number of matches.
Five players to watch
Mirsolav Klose - He is so close to being the World Cup’s top scorer of all time, and that's enough motivation to make anyone raise his game. Klose will be pumped up and even if he comes off the bench, he will be doing everything to get that goal.
Clint Dempsey - Former Fulham star Dempsey is having a fantastic tournament so far with two goals in two matches and will be essential to the USA’s chances of getting anything out of the game.
Thomas Muller - Produced the goods in the first game but went missing at times in the second against Ghana. Will be looking to add to his World Cup tally to try to become the first player to win back-to-back 'Golden Boots'.
Jermaine Jones - Scored an absolute crackerjack against Portugal and everyone will be watching to see if he can produce the same again.
Mario Goetze - Scored against Ghana and is a real weapon going forward - expect the Bayern Munich man to create lots of chances.
