Unlucky Arsenal star out-does record holder who replaced him

Lukas Podolski 2 Germany

Arsenal's Lukas Podolski played just 45 minutes from the start in the World Cup against USA.

Lukas Podolski was the surprise name in Germany's starting line-up as they worked for a 1-0 win over USA.

His involvement was over only too quickly however as he was substituted at half-time, without barely a chance to show what he can do.

Unfortunately he did manage two efforts on goal, but each of those he missed the target with.

Manager Jogi Low believed a more direct approach was needed, and brought him off and selecting World Cup all-time joint record goalscorer Miroslav Klose in his place.

Miroslav Klose Germany 1 0.00 75.00 15 45

Klose failed to shine himself, missing a chance to become an outright World Cup record holder and move clear of Ronaldo, and being less efficient in the passing game than Podolski.

He was also involved, on the ball at least, half as much as Podolski was, who had twice as many touches as his replacement.

It should not be lost that it was in the second half which Germany bagged their winner, and Klose's presence alone and aura gave the USA defence a little extra to be cautious of.

Yet seeing his only start of the tournament end so quickly will be disappointing for Podolski, who will feel he has so much more to give.

His replacement offered less than he did, so the Arsenal man should feel unfortunate to have been hooked so early on into the contest, and his prospects of starting in the second round clash certainly appear questionable.
