The World Cup group stage is almost over, and many players have caught the eye with their impressive displays ahead of the transfer window.
Group B has seen one of the shocks of the tournament, as reigning champions Spain have sensationally crashed out in the group stage, whilst Holland and Chile have marched into the knockout stages of the World Cup, leaving Australia with the wooden spoon after three defeats, though Ange Postecoglou's side can be proud of their performances.
There have been plenty of impressive performances from both teams and individuals in Group B, and a number of players have already been linked with transfer moves, such as Chile's Gary Medel and Alexis Sanchez, as well as Holland's Daley Blind and Bruno Martins Indi – yet Arsenal should be targeting a move for another of the Dutch stars.
Louis van Gaal's men incredibly hammered Spain 5-1 in the opening group game before going on to beat Australia 3-2 and Chile 2-0. With nine points and attacking football aplenty, there is a growing sense that Holland could be set for a deep run into the tournament, starting with their last 16 matchup with Mexico on Sunday.
The former Manchester City man is currently playing in Italy with AC Milan, and he has one again shown that he is an outstanding enforcer in the middle of the park. De Jong has made a career out of sitting in front of the back four, breaking up play superbly.
Arsenal have plenty of ball playing midfielders, but now they need to add some steel to protect the back four – after all, that's why manager Arsene Wenger snubbed the chance to re-sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona. In de Jong, they would be adding an experienced defensive midfield player who can add the nasty side to the Arsenal side that they have needed for some time.
