'I could not wait any more' - Manchester United target Garay explains cut-price transfer to Zenit

Ezequiel Garay for Benfica

Ezequiel Garay has revealed why he signed for Zenit St Petersburg, and did not hang around to see if Manchester United or Bayern Munich followed up their interest.

For a year-and-a-half, relentless rumours have circled Ezequiel Garay surrounding his future.

And the Argentine finally has had enough.

The World Cup star sealed a move from Benfica to Zenit St Petersburg yesterday, for a bargain price of just €6 million, report Reuters.

Garay had been strongly linked with Manchester United, reported to be lined up last summer ahead of David Moyes' arrival at the club, but the Scotsman decided not to pursue a deal.

The centre-back went onto enjoy a Primeira Liga winning season in Portugal, also reaching the Europa League semi-finals.

Reports a month ago claimed he was heading for Bayern Munich, while departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand from Manchester United made him a logical candidate for United to pursue.

That's now off the table with Garay set to link up with former Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas at Zenit, and the defender says it is because he felt a need to sort his future out once and for all.

He told Benfica's website: "This is the moment. I could not wait any longer, but I will take all the unforgettable moments I lived in Portugal with me."

Garay is at the stage of his career where he needs a new challenge, and Zenit's interest has clearly convinced him to take the leap.

Russia is not a destination usually considered as preferable in football terms to Germany or England, by AVB and Zenit have succeeded by being the most determined to land him.

Garay has been stuck waiting for United to make firm their interest in him for too long, and if he continued - he may still be a Benfica player by time the season kicks off.

His statement illustrates other clubs had a chance to sign him, but they lost out by dragging their heels. As United consider paying £34 million for young left-back Luke Shaw, the fact they could have had an experienced centre-back approaching his peak for a fraction of the price is does not need spelling out, and the Red Devils may regret not making a harder push for Garay's signature.
