Germany player ratings v USA: B Munich man clinical

Thomas Muller, Germany National Football Team

A well taken second-half goal from Thomas Muller was enough to ensure Germany win 1-0 and finish top of Group G.

Germany went into their last match of the group stages knowing only a draw would be enough to send them through to the last 16.

Despite that, there wasn't a moment in their match against the USA where they weren't dominating. The only thing that may concern them was that they only scored once, but the Muller strike in the second half was enough to secure victory and mean they finish top of Group G, a group commonly referred to as the 'Group of death.'

Here are the player ratings for Germany:

Manuel Neuer - 7

The Goalkeeper had very shots to save, which he will be more than happy about. Had a lot of touches though with the ball at his feet, and looked comfortable doing so.

Benedikt Howedes - 6

The Schalke centre-back continues to play left back for his country, looks comfortable when defending but going forward he has a lot of space to move into but struggles with the final ball.

Matt Hummels - 7

Borussia Dortmund defender looked comfortable throughout the 90 minutes against the USA, although was rarely tested. Will want more of the same in the last 16.

Per Mertesacker - 7

It is no secret the Arsenal defender struggle when dealing with strikers who have pace, but when they don't he looks a solid defender. Was rarely exposed against the United States and played well doing so.

Jerome Boateng - 7

Similar to Howedes, the centre-back for club plays right back for country. However Boateng looks comfortable going forward and delivered a couple of dangerous crosses. Despite his brother being sent home earlier in the day, Jerome will continue to appear in the 2014 World Cup.

Philim Lahm (C) - 7

Some people in the German press want Lahm to revert back to the full-back position, but today he showed why Low plays him there for his national team. Rarely loses the ball, Lahm is vital in the Germany machine.

Bastian Schweinsteiger - 6

Made his first start of the 2014 World Cup instead of Sami Khedira, looked at times off the pace with a few fouls but did the simple things well as always. Will want to improve next time though.

Toni Kroos - 7

The young Bayern midfielder looks at ease when he has the ball at his feet, his array of passing is outstanding when given the time to get his head up. USA struggled to close him down.

Mesut Ozil - 7

The Arsenal winger looked to create something every time he had the ball, but struggled at times to find space behind a USA team that were happy to sit deep. Kept the ball well though.

Lukas Podolski - 6

Like Schweinsteiger, Podolski started his first match of the tournament and struggled in the first half. Was substituted off at half time and will be unlikely to start in their last 16 match after this performance that lacked his normal cutting edge.

Thomas Muller - 8

You never quite know where Muller is meant to be playing, and that has caused defenders a lot of problems so far in this tournament, His movement has allowed him to score four goals in three games so far. His finish today was outstanding, he seems to be in good form for this tournament.

Miroslav Klose - 7

Come on for Lukas Podolski at half-time. The 36 year-old striker didn't have any clear chances to score, but held the ball up well and looked to have a good relationship alongside Muller.

Mario Gotze - 7

Come on for Bastian Schweinsteiger after 76 minutes. Didn't have many touches of the ball, but don't be surprised if he starts in the last 16 back on the left wing.

Andre Schurrle - N/A

The Chelsea winger come on for Mesut Ozil after 89 minutes.
