On this day: Chelsea finally sign £18m winger and Liverpool complete £9m move

Mignolet

On the 25th June 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Liverpool, Manchester United, Southampton and Chelsea.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 25th June 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 25th June 2013…

Schurrle thing

It had been ironed out weeks earlier, but a year ago today saw the official unveiling of German international Andre Schurrle as a Chelsea player.

The flying winger had long been a target for Chelsea - who had tried to sign him the previous summer, to no avail.

The deal had been arranged weeks weeks earlier, but it was made official on this day.

Believed to be worth £18 million Schurrle said this of the deal:

"I am so happy now I have signed and it is an honour for me to play for this club, with this team and for these great fans. I am really looking forward to it."

In his first season Schurrle impressed, scoring nine and assisting two in 40 appearances, many of which were as a substitute.

Want-yama

Manchester United were being linked with a move for Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama. The bullish midfielder was reportedly all set to join Southampton, but the deal had fell through.

His agent stated:

"We are not in talks with Southampton and have not been since their final offer of terms, which was more than two weeks ago. The news of the fee being agreed may just be coming out now, but we see little sense in a fee being agreed if there is no reasonable prospect of the player's terms being met. To suggest we are talking with Southampton is totally false, their offer was way below Victor's expectations. There is no chance of him signing the deal on offer...We know there is interest from elsewhere and Victor is obviously open to those prospects."

It was this that reportedly alerted United back onto the possibility of signing the bulldog midfield operator. But he did move on last summer. Not to United but to Southampton after all in a complicated £12.5 million move.

Mign in

A year ago today and Liverpool made their fourth summer signing in the form of a goalkeeper - Simon Mignolet.

The Belgian arrived at Anfield from Premier League rivals Sunderland for a fee in the region of £9 million after a terrific 2012-13 for the Wearside based stopper.

Liverpool's purchase however caused a ripple, still causing problems today with regards to Pepe Reina. The Spaniard went to Napoli on loan for the season but has admitted today that he has to come back to Anfiled for pre-season - reluctantly.

Mignolet had a solid if not spectacular first campaign although he did receive criticism from some quarters.
