Liverpool reportedly rekindle interest in £7m World Cup defender

Reports today suggest that Liverpool have made a £7m bid to sign Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld.

As Liverpool threw away the title in the final weeks of the Premier League season, it was their defence that let them down - particularly in the spectacular collapse at Crystal Palace, contriving to draw 3-3 despite having been three goals up entering the final ten minutes.

Subsequently, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers must look to strengthen his back line this summer, particularly as rumours persist over the future of Danish international Daniel Agger. Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel, Kolo Toure and Tiago Ilori figure to be part of the plans next season, but one more centre back would certainly help.

The Reds reportedly targeted a move for Alderweireld a year ago when he starred for Ajax, but the Belgian international instead chose to sign for Atletico Madrid - where he has barely featured. The form of central defensive pairing Diego Godin and Miranda has led to limited first-team opportunities this summer, and with his prospects still looking bleak, Liverpool could land themselves a bargain.

Speculation today suggests that Liverpool have submitted a £7m offer to the La Liga champions for the 25-year-old, as they finally look to land Alderweireld - but where would he feature?

Primarily a centre back from his days with Ajax, Alderweireld would figure to compete for a place in the heart of the defence, but he's looked solid at the World Cup for Belgium whilst playing at right back. With question marks over the future of Glen Johnson at Anfield, Alderweireld could continue his career on the right hand side of the defence.

Yet it's far more likely that Alderweireld would want to prove that he's a capable centre half - and whilst his time at Atletico puts that into doubt, his displays for Ajax suggest that there is plenty of untapped potential in him for Rodgers to harness.
