Liverpool legend believes Barcelona and World Cup star could be heading to Anfield

Alexis Sanchez Chile

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has told of how he's heard that Barcelona's Alexis Sanchez could sign for the Reds this summer.

Whilst Liverpool threw away the Premier League title with poor results against Chelsea and Crystal Palace at the end of last season, spirits are still high around Merseyside as the club gears up for a return to Champions League football in September. In order to cope with the rigours that come with playing in both the Premier League and the Champions League, manager Brendan Rodgers must strengthen his squad this summer.

He's already added Southampton striker Rickie Lambert and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can to his squad, but with money to spend, it's almost certain that there will be even more signings for Liverpool this summer, and one name continues to be linked with a big move to the club.

Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez could leave the Camp Nou this summer as the Catalan giants look to rebuild, and he's been linked with Liverpool either just as a cash buy or as part of an unlikely swap deal for Reds striker Luis Suarez. Yet Liverpool legend Thompson told Irish radio station Newstalk that he's heard Sanchez could be close to a move to Merseyside.

"Even just yesterday I had things from people, newspaper guys with their ear very close to the ground at Liverpool, saying that the Sanchez deal is actually done," said Thompson.

These are - so far - fairly unsubstantiated claims by Thompson, but Liverpool fans will no doubt be excited about the prospect of the former Udinese man arriving at the club. Sanchez is currently starring for Chile at the World Cup, and whilst he would be a great addition, that would only be the case if Suarez stays at Liverpool.

Adding Sanchez's pace to an already electric front line of Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge and Suarez would make Liverpool's potent strike force even more dangerous. This potential deal is one to keep an eye on, but given that Sanchez is in Brazil concentrating on the last 16 matchup with hosts Brazil, it's unlikely that a deal is as close as Thompson says.
