Manchester United are in need of a central defender or two this summer, and one player who they have regularly been linked with was Ezequiel Garay. The Argentinian defender has now completed a move to Andre Villas-Boas' side Zenit St Petersburg for a fee of €15m. which is equivalent to £12m.
Of that total fee Benfica will only receive around £4.8 million as they only owned 40% of the player. Real Madrid owned another 50% whilst the remaining 10% was owned by third parties.
Over the last year Manchester United have found themselves linked with defensive players when it became likely that they would need to replace long-serving duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. Garay seemed to be of high priority but the 27-year-old had been attracting many other major European clubs as well.
AVB's side have now won the race for the highly-rated defender and have signed him for a bargain price in this day and age. Garay is 27-years-old the same age as David Luiz who has just joined Paris Saint-Germain from Chelsea for a huge fee of £40m.
Luiz can be fairly unreliable at times, and Garay is a world-class defender currently playing for Argentina at the World Cup. Zenit have secured a great player at a decent price and one can only wonder whether Manchester United did end up making a move for him. If they did and they missed out to Zenit then it is a worrying sign, perhaps due to their lack of European action next season.
If they didn't make a move for him then why not? This could represent one of the bargains of the season, and at a good age with plenty of experience he would have been an ideal signing for The Red Devils.
