Ecuador 0-0 France: Manchester United winger sent off

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia was sent off in what a highly charged 0-0 draw.

France came into the game needing only a draw to top the group, whilst Ecuador had to win and rely on goal difference to come runner up.

Ecuador certainly came out the blocks fast and tried to get at France as much as possible. France held up though and had lots of changes of their own. Moussa Sissoko went close with a crashing volley and through Paul Pogba also.

Paul Pogba had a few chances and will be disappointed to have not got a goal but the real defining moment of the match came when Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia was sent off with a straight red. French defender Lucas Digne timed a brilliant tackle and Valencia’s run carried him through onto Digne. The referee saw it as a raised boot with studs high, perhaps even a stamp. It looked dubious and only Valencia will know whether it was accidental or not.

Ecuador had further chances, but Cristhian Noboa had a big one when shooting wide from in a good position.

France go through winners and will now play Nigeria while Ecuador bow out the 2014 World Cup.
