Uruguay player ratings v Italy: Southampton man plays well

Gaston Ramirez 10

A late Diego Godin header from a Gaston Ramirez corner was enough for Uruguay to beat Italy 1-0 in Natal and secure a place in the last 16.

Diego Godin scored the goal for Atletico Madrid to win the league title for his country against Barcelona on the last day of La Liga, and he did just the same in the 81st minute for his country that sends them into the knockout stages.

Here are the player ratings for Uruguay:

Fernando Muslera - 7

Wasn't tested much in the Uruguay goal, but did everything asked of him.

Martin Caceres - 6

Former Barcelona midfielder struggled as Immobile looked to use his pace down the right hand side of the Uruguay defence.

Álvaro Pereira - 7

Kept Balotelli quiet that meant he was substituted early, played well throughout and was strong when the Italian pressure arrived late on.

Diego Godin - 8

Outstanding again, yes he scored the winner but his overall play was brilliant, Italy looked lost as to how to break Uruguay down, brilliant performance.

José María Giménez - 7

Made a superb tackle on Immobile when the Italian looked like he was through on goal, elsewhere was composed on the ball.

Nicolás Lodeiro - 7

Was an engine in the Uruguay midfield that is essential to their success, will need him for his work-rate as they progress to the knockout stages.

Egidio Arévalo - 6

Strong in the tackle, workman like similar to Lodeiro, but limited with his attacking threat and possibilities.

Álvaro Rafael González - 7

Made a good block from a Balotelli shot early on, was composed and efficient on the ball also. Good performance.

Cristian Rodriguez - 6

The Atletico Madrid man was poor in his overall play, and missed a good chance when the scoreline was 0-0 when one on one with Buffon.

Edinson Cavani - 7

Didn't have many chances, if any, his overall movement and holding up the ball was strong. Was in space a number of times also but wasn't seen by teammates.

Luis Suarez - 4

All the controversy surrounds Suarez again for being accused of a bite on Chiellini. Looked a frustrated character before that incident and is likely to face a lengthy ban after his incident. Disgusting behaviour.

Subs:

Maxi Pereira - 7

Come on for Lodeiro after 45 minutes, was strong and energetic in his return from suspension for Uruguay.

Cristian Stuani - 7

Come on for Alvaro Pereira after 63 minutes, the Espanyol striker joined the attack well and looked to find space well.

Gaston Ramirez - 7

Come on for Cristian Rodriguez after 78 minutes, delivered the corner that set up Godin's goal with almost his first touch, great impact.
