According to various reports in Spain, Manchester United are closing in on a €36 million deal for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.
The Spanish star has been a long-term target for the Red Devils, with former boss David Moyes pinpointing him as a key target during last summer’s transfer window.
United, however, had to settle for former Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini, but the Belgian’s inability to solve the renowned midfield problem has seen the Old Trafford outfit allegedly return for Ander Herrera.
The 24-year-old has a reported €36 million release clause, and with this amount set to increase by €4 million on July 1, Man United may well be in a hurry to get the deal done.
The reports go on to say that Ander Herrera has an agreement with Louis Van Gaal’s new team, despite saying only last month that he has no intentions of leaving the Basque club.
“I have already made it clear, I don’t want to leave Athletic. Above all else, Athletic and I are on the same path. This is where I belong, my place is here and I am very happy.” He said, quoted by Inside Spanish football.
Herrera notched five goals and a further five assists in 33 La Liga appearances for Athletic Bilbao last season, becoming a key player in helping the team qualify for the Champions League.
€36 million, however, is a big price to be paying for a player without Champions League experience and as the news broke in Spanish media, a number of Athletic Bilbao supporters spoke out, hinting it’s one which is massively overinflated.
Disdier: “He’s a good player, but not worth €36 million. He’s not even involved in the World Cup.”
Metalico1905: “€36m for him? What barbarity, what a way to throw your money away. He’s not even worth half of what they’re saying they are going to pay. Football has become crazy.”
Pogba_6: “€36m? Ander seems like a decent player but before spending €36m on him, I would buy Toni Kroos.”
Manolo:”He’s good, but it’s not normal that Fabregas is worth €33m and Herrera €36m. Man United are fools for not going after Rakitic for €20m.”
Bat: “What great business for Athletic, we have at least two players better than him in his position.”
Cristian93: “What I don’t understand is how Herrera is more expensive than Cesc. If it’s true we should laugh in the face of Bartomeu.”
Karbonero88: “He doesn’t have the maturity nor the physicality to play for Man United.”
Juakoybea: “Good player, but not worth €36 million.”
Kolarov16: “With all my respect for Ander, who is brilliant, but to pay €36m for him yet nobody is paying Marco Reus’ €35m release clause is a scandal.”
Elio: “€36m for five goals and five assists - who is complaining?”
Pablo Alvarez: “So Alexis Sanchez, what is he worth? €80m?”
