Stats: How 'Next Ronaldo' compares to Ronaldo - good for United/Spurs?

Cristiano Ronaldo United

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur reportedly keen on Memphis Depay, dubbed the next Cristiano Ronaldo who currently lights up Real Madrid.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have been transfer linked with the player dubbed "the next Cristiano Ronaldo", however, judging solely by 2014 World Cup performances alone, the youngster eclipses the Portugal and Real Madrid superstar and has a case for one of the most effective athletes at the competition in Brazil - certainly the most useful substitute, at least.

PSV Eindhoven winger Depay, 22, built a reputation in the Eredivisie and Europa League due to his technical finesse, his exceptional abliity with the ball at his feet, his vision and creativity and his eye for goal.

Bild recently claimed the player was the subject of intense interest from two Premier League sides, Spurs and United, as both clubs bought his 'next Ronaldo' tag and were willing to offer PSV £20 million in order to release him from a contract that still has three years to run.

Bild reference the link established between Depay and Netherlands national team manager Louis van Gaal, who is set to become United don once he finishes his World Cup responsibilities.

Ronaldo may be the subject of various highlight-reel clips for his continual mugging of various USA players during the recent Portugal match, but Depay is the far superior athlete when it comes to effectiveness in the two matches completed by each nation thus far - and the Ballon d'Or winner has competed in three times as many pitch minutes.

From his cameo appearances in the 5-1 festival over Spain and the 2-0 taming of Chile, Depay saw a touch of the football every 1.35 minutes, attempted a pass every 2.5 minutes and attempted a dribble every 7.3 minutes. He has been responsible for a direct goal assist once and has scored twice. Ronaldo is yet to open his account.

Depay's market valuation on transfermarkt.co.uk is a rather modest £4.4 million, but, as Bild imply, the player is bound to PSV until 2017 and so the club have the upper hand at the negotiating table.

His ability to shine on the grandest of stages suggest he is ready for a big-money, high-profile move, though - but will it be to the Premier League and do United have the greater pull thanks to the presence of Van Gaal?
