Southampton's Luke Shaw is on the verge of becoming the most expensive teenager in British football, subject of a huge transfer bid from Manchester United.
The left-back finally got a chance to do show what he can do in a World Cup game, selected from the start in England's World Cup match against Costa Rica.
The defender will have found the experience invaluable as well as a dream come true, but it was more than that - Shaw showed that Roy Hodgson really should have given him greater consideration for a starting role in the earlier games.
|Match||Matchday||Won Tackles||Interceptions Won||Ball Recoveries||Pass Completion %||Mins|
|Luke Shaw||vs Costa Rica||03||1||2||6||84%||90|
With Everton's Leighton Baines exposed as a weak point in the England line-up, Shaw looked composed and untroubled by the attack of group winners Costa Rica.
There was a worst case scenario in the match that Shaw was badly exposed defensively, potentially causing his price tag to dip or United to take the reactionary move of dropping their interest - but Shaw showed he is adept and skilled enough not to let this happen.
Shaw, spoke positively of the experience after the 0-0 draw via TheFA.com: "It was amazing. For me to only be 18 years old and to be playing in the biggest competition in the world is a dream come true.
"And I don’t want to stop now. I want to keep on pushing and pushing myself to get better and better, and hopefully get more caps in the future. I was focused on winning the game, but sadly we couldn’t do that."
