Italy player ratings v Uruguay: Arsenal target struggles

Mario Balotelli Italy

Mario Balotelli was subbed off at half time as Italy lost 1-0 to Uruguay, a result that means they're out of the 2014 World Cup in the Group stages.

A late Diego Godin header was enough to send Uruguay through from Group D at the expense of Italy, a result that shocked the Azzurri. The Italians looked comfortable throughout, but they knew a defeat would see them crash out in the group stages for the second tournament in a row.

Here are the player ratings for Italy:

Gianluigi Buffon - 7

Made a great save from Suarez when the score was 0-0, couldn't do much with the goal as it was from close range. Last ever World Cup appearance ended in disappointment.

Matteo Darmian - 6

Not an outstanding performance from the Torino player, made a great impact in the England match but has struggled in the last two matches for Italy.

Mattia De Sciglio - 7

Stronger in his defensive play that he was against Costa Rica, will feel annoyed with Godin's goal as he was there, but come off the Uruguay's shoulder.

Giorgio Chiellini - 7

His left shoulder is the one in the centre of all the controversy regarding Luis Suarez, played well for most of the game did the experienced Juventus defender.

Leonardo Bonucci - 6

At times where he struggled with the movement of Edinson Cavani, will feel annoyed with his individual performance.

Andrea Barzagli - 6

Similar to Darmian, made less of an impact in this match than he has done previously. Not to blame however in the Italian defeat.

Claudio Marchisio - 5

Was playing well in the midfield as Italy looked in complete control for the first hour, but his 'studs over the ball' challenge deserved the red card and was costly in the Italians going out. Very much to blame.

Andrea Pirlo - 7

Had to do more running in the midfield than he would have liked, still very consistent in the midfield with his passing, didn't have the same impact as the England match.

Marco Verratti - 6

Was substituted after 75 minutes, showed his inexperienced at times in the performance knowing when to go forward and when to stay back. Still great potential though.

Mario Balotelli - 6

Balotelli may have haunted England with the winning goal in the first match, but his previous two performances was not to the same standards. Too inconsistent.

Ciro Immobile - 6

Will need to improve when he moves to Borussia Dortmund if he is to replace Lewandowski, was missing in the big moments.

Marco Parolo - 7

Come on for Mario Balotelli after 45 minutes, looked solid overall but didn't make too much of an impact.

Antonio Cassano - 6

Come on for Ciro Immobile after 71 minutes, didn't make any real attacking impact at all, struggled.

Thiago Motta - 6

The experienced midfielder come on for Verrati after 75 minutes, his job was to defend but unfortunately for him Uruguay scored within 5 minutes.
