Dirk Kuyt was handed his first appearance of the World Cup by Louis van Gaal as the Netherlands maintained their 100% record at the World Cup with a 2-0 win over Chile - which means they top Group B.
They will face Mexico in the second round of the competition at the weekend with goals from Leroy Fer and Memphis Depay, whilst Kuyt was given the opportunity to impress.
Liverpool fans will remember he was quite a versatile player who was praised for his work rate having played up front and on both flanks during his time on Merseyside, but they won't have had the opportunity to see the Dutchman occupying the rather unfamiliar position of left-wing back he was selected in by his manager.
Some may have wondered if he still played international football after he left Liverpool in 2012, some were puzzled by the role he was given in the Netherlands team, whilst others still remember him fondly for his time in the Premier League.
Here is what a few users on twitter had to say regarding the oldest member of the Dutch squad, and his performance in a rather unfamiliar position in Sao Paulo:
when did dirk kuyt turn 33 i always thought he was like 25— emilia (@lovegccd) June 23, 2014
It's so frustrating that a team containing dirk kuyt and Ron Vlaar have 9 more points than England— Rory Morris (@m_rozza) June 23, 2014
Dirk Kuyt was the oldest man on the field but I bet he could still play 120 minutes without breaking a sweat. Dude has three lungs.— Haris (@HarisBRosli) June 23, 2014
Dirk Kuyt suffering from cramp....never !— John Bradley (@JBcommentator) June 23, 2014
Arjen Robben FIFA-MOTM, but the real MOTM today was for me Dirk Kuyt. Playing that well at that age at a position you are not used to! (y)— Dutch Investor (@SportstraderNL) June 23, 2014
Dirk Kuyt is playing left back tonight. Liverpool need a left back. Are you thinking what i'm thinking?— Aled Evans (@_AledEvans) June 23, 2014
