Monday evening's World Cup games threw up the first winner takes all group game in this final round of fixtures, with Mexico facing Croatia as both teams faced up to the knowledge that only a win would be sure to take their country through.
With Brazil facing already out Cameroon in the other game, and leading the group going into the final games, Mexico were sat in second place with the same amount of points as the hosts, while Croatia were the most in need of a win, one point behind.
A tense first half ended 0-0, and with the news that Brazil were winning in the federal capital, the game moved up several notches after the break
With 18 minutes left on the clock, Mexico broke the deadlock, as captain Rafael Marquez scored in his third World Cup finals. Winger Andres Guardado quickly doubled their lead before Javier Hernandez put the tie out of reach, despite Ivan Perisic's late consolation.
Manchester United's Hernandez, who has had to make do featuring from the bench for the Central Americans this summer much like he has done for the majority of his United career, finally managed to make an impression in Brazil by netting his first goal of the tournament.
The 26-year-old was full of emotion after scoring in his second consecutive World Cup, running to the bench and bursting into tears of joy - joy that was no doubt doubled by the fact it was the icing on the cake that sent Mexico into the next round as 3-1 winners.
Below we look at some of the tweets that followed his strike and confirmation that Mexico emerged from Group A as runners up, with Miguel Herrera's men now destined for a knockout game with Group B winners Netherlands.
If Hernandez wants to impress incoming United manager Louis van Gaal, he certainly has the perfect platform to do it.
Hernandez scores after 1 year!!! Chicharito puts this 3-0 and that’s it for Croatia, thank you very much!— Karla Villegas Gama (@karlitsv) June 23, 2014
You can't blame Pletikosa for that one. Hernandez has stretched the game this half and Croatia just don't look as fit.— Samuel Luckhurst (@samuelluckhurst) June 23, 2014
