Reports at the weekend claimed Tottenham Hotspur were interested in signing PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay.
The 20-year-old is currently starring for Holland at the World Cup, but reports claimed Spurs had joined Manchester United in the chase to sign a player rated at around £17million.
But just 24 hours later and a fresh suitor has been linked with Depay, with Spanish broadsheet El Confidencial claiming Real Madrid are monitoring the 20-year-old with a view to making a summer move.
It is claimed Real are considering Depay as a replacement for Angel Di Maria, who has previously indicated that while he would like to remain at the Bernabeu, it is the club who have the final say.
Arsenal have long been linked with the £40million-rated Argentina international, who played a role (either scoring or assisting) in a remarkable 37 goals last season. But the rumours persist that Real are willing to sell the 26-year-old, and now it appears they may have a possible replacement.
The news will come as a blow to Tottenham fans excited at the prospect of seeing Depay at White Hart Lane. But if the Netherlands international does move to La Liga, Arsenal could finally get their hands on Di Maria, who could reform his partnership with former Real teammate Mesut Ozil at the Emirates.
There are a lot of ifs, buts and maybes here, but with El Confidencial claiming Real are excited by Depay’s speed and want to make a number of changes this summer, one North London side’s disappointment could lead to another’s elation.
