Lovren linked with £15m Spurs move but who does Pochettino sell?

Mauricio Pochettino will likely have to axe a key Tottenham Hotspur star to bring in Dejan Lovren.

Latest reports suggest Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen on signing Dejan Lovren from former club Southampton in a potential £15 million deal.

The 24-year-old Croatian was one of several players to have impressed with the Saints last season, sparking talk of a potential move to Anfield.

However, Tottenham now appear ready to try and stop Liverpool from signing Lovren, but Pochettino has a big decision to make if the reports over Tottenham’s interest are accurate.

Any move for Lovren would have to be based around Pochettino letting one of Tottenham’s current four centre-backs leave so what are his options?

Jan Vertonghen

Pochettino could sell the Belgian for a decent fee and it’s well known that he’s looking to play Champions League football.

However, Vertonghen is one of the most versatile defensive players at the club and while he may not enjoy left-back, he offers an option in that area. He’s also an extremely good player in possession, able to pass out from the back.

Younes Kaboul

Kaboul is never going to be the best defender to watch but he’s quick and carries a strong, physical presence in the back four.

He’s had his injury problems but if Pochettino can keep him fit, he’s likely to use him frequently next season. He can play on either side of central defence and is strong in the air, which may just tempt the Argentine to keep him.

Vlad Chiriches

He’s only had one season in English football and looked like a decent defender when he played last season.

He’ll be better offer for the year he’s just had and is another quick and versatile defensive player. He looks like a good example of a player Pochettino could invest a lot of time in, to develop into one of the most important players at the club.

Michael Dawson

Hull City are reportedly sniffing around the Tottenham Hotspur captain and he may be the player Pochettino lets go.

He’s not as quick as he was and strikers found ways of dominating him physically last season. What the boss has to weigh up is how much leadership and authority he’s going to lose at the back of the team if Dawson is the player who makes way so Lovren can come in.
