20-year-old Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi has reportedly agreed to join French side Marseille this week.
English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a blow this morning with the news that Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi is on the verge of moving to French giants Olympique de Marseille this week. The reports come from Belgian paper DH and have been backed up by French daily L’Equipe. The striker had been linked with a move to Arsenal, Everton and Spurs, but Mauricio Pochettino will now have to look elsewhere for his first signing of the summer.
The 20-year-old Belgian striker will become the first player to sign for OM in the Marcelo Bielsa era, as the Argentine coach takes charge of the side that disappointed in finishing sixth in Ligue 1 last season.
Last season in the Belgian Juplier League he scored 21 goals in 34 starts, attracting the attention of scouts all over Europe. This brings his two season total to 33, after he broke onto the scene for Standard Liege during the 2012/13 season.
A 1-0 defeat to Club Brugge in the play-off system that decides the Belgian championship gave Anderlecht a two point lead over Standard, and although they won their last two games, they weren’t able to recover.
Batshuayi scored three goals in the 10 play-off games as Standard finished second. His performances in the league were set to win him a place on Marc Wilmots 23-man squad for this summer’s World Cup, but the former international midfielder made a shock in picking Divock Origi in his place, omitting Batshuayi from his 30-man prelim squad.
Now the Belgian will have the chance to impress at one of France’s biggest clubs, although they had a poor season, Marseille are still one of the biggest clubs in France and under Bielsa they hope to return to the European places next season.
The player announced via twitter yesterday that he would soon have great news to announce, confirming the rumours that he was set to move on.
Chers twittos, j'aurai bientôt une grande nouvelle a vous annoncer. Merci pour votre soutien— Michy Batshuayi (@mbatshuayi) June 22, 2014
It’s hard to know what sort of style Bielsa is planning for Marseille, but if he continues to sign young exciting players like Batshuayi then the OM faithful will continue to get excited for the new season.
