Yorkshire latest: Leeds miss out on Arsenal front-man; Sheffield Utd close in on defender

We bring you the latest news from Leeds United, Sheffield United and Barnsley.

We bring you all the biggest news involving the clubs in Yorkshire that has broken in the last 24 hours.

1) Leeds miss out on Chuks Aneke

Chuks Aneke, a reported target of Leeds United, has completed a move to Zulte Waregem today.

Aneke has been linked with a move to Elland Road for much of the transfer window so far, but has opted to move to Belgium to play in the Jupiler Pro League, signing a three-year-deal with Essevee.

The powerful forward had seen his contract expire at Arsenal and was available on a free-transfer.

It was thought that he would stay in England after impressing on loan at Crewe last season, but the lure of potential European football was obviously too much.

Zulte Waregem finished in fourth place in the Belgian top division last season and enter the Europa League at the second qualifying round stage.

Leeds, meanwhile, have been linked with other attackers in recent times including Jefferson and Daniele Cacia, who both play in Italy.

2) Forest Green chairman believes David Hockaday deserves the opportunity to be Leeds boss

David Hockaday’s appointment as new Leeds United head coach has been greeted with much derision from supporters of the Championship club, but his former boss, Dale Vince, believes he deserves a chance.

Vince worked with Hockaday at Forest Green, where the 56-year-old embarked on his first and only managerial spell to date, and he says that he deserves his chance to move up the leagues.

“I’m really pleased for David actually, I’m chuffed for him,” Vince said to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“He’s a great bloke. He’s a very hard-working, loyal and honest man with an unbelievable depth of footballing knowledge.

“I really want him to succeed, but would not dare to predict how it will work out for him.

“Massimo Cellino is a lot better qualified than me to make a judgement on whether David can be successful in the Championship, but he deserves his chance.”

3) Kieron Freeman on verge of Bramall Lane return.

Kieron Freeman is set to sign for Sheffield United on a permanent basis, according to the Sheffield Telegraph.

Freeman impressed on a loan spell at the club last season and Nigel Clough is known to have targeted bringing the defender back for the upcoming campaign.

It seems he has been successful in his pursuit of the Derby County man, too, with Freeman expected to complete a move to Yorkshire before July 3, when the squad begin pre-season training.

4) Harry Maguire delays Sheffield United contract talks

In-demand Sheffield United defender Harry Maguire, has delayed signing a new contract at the club, the Sheffield Telegraph has revealed.

Maguire was offered improved terms on his existing contract as Blades are determined not to lose their prized asset, amid interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Hull City.

However, the youngster has decided not to sign the deal for the time being as he wants to see if Sheffield United will accept an offer from either of the clubs, after they have rejected all bids so far.

5) Barnsley have second bid rejected for Conor Hourihane

Barnsley have failed in their second attempt to sign Plymouth Argyle captain Conor Hourihane.

The Plymouth Herald report that Barnsley are trying to land the League Two side’s captain as they look to bolster their squad for their upcoming campaign following relegation from the Championship last season.

It is understood that this second offer was Barnsley final attempt to land the 23-year-old and they will not increase their bid any further.
