Mourinho on Bayern Munich man: 'I like him so, so much'

Bayern Munich players warming up - Lahm, Ribery, Robben

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has commented on Bayern Munich's Phillip Lahm.

Speaking to Yahoo, Mourinho stated his preference for the German defender as a full-back, although he said he understood Joachim Low's decision to play Lahm in midfield.

The 30-year-old is comfortable at either left-back or right-back but has been deployed in midfield this season by Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola, with Low following suit in charge of the German national team.

Mourinho, however, believes Lahm is at his best when out wide and revealed that he is a huge fan of the Munich man.

"I love Philipp Lahm as a full-back," the 51-year-old said. "Either on the right or on the left, where he has played so many times.

"I like him so much playing on either side because he's so aggressive going forward and has high quality passing and crossing ... Even at left-back coming inside to shoot. I like him so, so much.

"But Joachim Low decided to play him in midfield. He has his own ideas and we have to respect them."

Lahm has, in the past, been a particular thorn in Mourinho's side, with his Bayern Munich side knocking Real Madrid out in the Champions League semi-finals two years ago.

Lahm showcased his talent in the first leg of that tie, exposing Madrid's left-hand side and setting Mario Gomez up for the winning goal in the dying minutes.

For Germany, meanwhile, the 30-year-old was equally efficient during their 4-0 win against Portugal at the World Cup.

Benedikt Höwedes 1 39 69 90
Philipp Lahm 2 74 95 90
Sami Khedira 1 47 61 90

As Opta stats show, Lahm was a lively presence for Die Mannschaft, taking more touches than any other Germany player and completing 75 accurate passes.

Defensively, the Bayern Munich defender/midfielder also contributed with two interceptions, and his presence will likely be crucial to the Germans' hopes of World Cup success as the tournament progresses.

No wonder Mourinho is a fan.
