Germany player ratings v Ghana: Ex-Everton man strong

Joachim Low Germany

Shkodran Mustafi may have only come on at half time, but his attacking intent was integral in the match opening up in the second half.

Germany were outstanding in their 4-0 win over Portugal in their opening match of the World Cup, but this one was far more difficult for them, and a draw was what they deserved.

Mario Gotze put the Germans into a 1-0 lead after 50 minutes, before two superb Ghana goals from Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan put the Black stars into a 2-1 lead. However Miroslav Klose come off the bench to equalise and become joint top with the Brazilian Ronaldo as the World Cup's all time top scorer with 15 goals, a sensational record for the 36 year-old.

Here are our player ratings for Germany:

Manuel Neuer - 6

Was as intimidating as always in goal but conceded two goals to a Ghana side who on the whole created very little. Made a strange kicking mistake at the end also worth a mention.

Jerome Boateng - 6

Faced his brother Kevin-Prince and marked him out of the match, taken off at half-time though with a slight injury. Solid defensively whilst he was on though.

Per Mertesacker - 6

As the match wore on and the German full-backs started to push on, his lack of pace become evident as Ghana's Asamoah Gyan began to spin off Mertesacker. Solid elsewhere though.

Matt Hummels - 7

Was able to cope better with Gyan's pace that Mertesacker, especially in one on one defending down the side of the Germany defence. Good performance.

Benedikt Höwedes - 6

In the first half, the centre-back playing right back for his country stayed back, but in the second half was forced to get further forward as Germany was looking for a goal. Didn't know what exactly he was meant to be doing at times.

Philip Lahm - 7

It is incredible how only 12 months ago he was seen a full-back and a full-back only, now he is central midfielder who looks like he has played their all his career. Brilliant performance from the Germany captain.

Sami Khedira - 6

The Real Madrid midfielder was protective overall of his back four, but was substituted after 70 minutes for Schweinsteiger as Germany were looking for a goal. May struggle to regain his place unless his overall performance improves.

Toni Kroos - 7

Created chances going forward and his passing continues to improve, growing into a very important player both for club and country. Real bright future ahead of him.

Mesut Ozil - 7

Arsenal midfielder looked dangerous when he was running down the flanks and providing crosses for Thomas Muller, also in the latter stages as the match become more stretched allowing him more space to exploit. Good performance.

Mario Gotze - 6

Scored the first goal of the match with a finish that looked like it come off his knee, but he won't care. Other than that had some half-chances in the first half but struggled to convert, substituted for Klose after 70 minutes.

Thomas Muller - 7

Some are not sure if Muller is a natural centre-forward or a false 'number 9', one thing is for sure, he looks like he could score every match. Seems to always have chances in matches, but was unable to convert any of his tonight against Ghana.

Shkodran Mustafi - 7

The former Everton defender come on for Jerome Boateng at half time, looked dangerous as he went forward. Looked a natural fit at full-back for his country.

Miroslav Klose - 8

Come on for Mario Gotze after 69 minutes, scored within two minutes of coming on. He may be 36 but his performances reflect someone much younger, will play a vital role for Germany in this tournament.

Bastian Schweinsteiger - 6

Come on for Sami Khedira after 70 minutes, looked to creat chances for those in front. However didn't have many touches of the ball, may start against USA though in their final group match to help him re-gain match fitness.
