The World Cup has been full of shocks and plucky underdog displays and today we almost saw another one. Iran have only ever won the one FIFA World Cup tie - but today they pushed Argentina to the very brink in a tight fixture. Team Melli pushed the Albiceleste to the very edge of their abilities and were Charlton Athletic striker Reza Ghoochannejhad in a more potent mood he might have put the tournament second favourites to the sword.
But, after 90 average minutes, Lionel Messi quickly stole the show. He finally found some time and space, cut into his left-foot, and stuck a superb curling effort beyond the goalkeeper Alireza Haghighi.
It was a touch of magic only capable of being pulled off by a player of Messi's talents. Talents that a certain Erik Lamela is supposed to possess.
The forward has been dubbed the 'next Messi' in his time - but you would forgive Tottenham fans for thinking that is a load of nonsense.
Lamela was signed for a fee in the region of £30 million from AS Roma. However, he has barely featured for the club. He has struggled with a back problem and spent most of his time away from the club doing his rehab. This summer he is being linked with several different moves back to Italy, as Daniel Levy contemplates selling the bomb.
Today however he was all national pride. Lamela, who could have gone to the World Cup with Argentina were circumstances different, was tuned into the game and sent this Tweet just after Messi struck home.
Siiii argentina !!! Siiii MESSI !!!! Gracias por ser argentino ... que jugador por diossss !!!! Los que lo critican no entienden nada !!!— Erik Manuel Lamela (@Coco_Lamela) June 21, 2014
Translated it means "Argentina Yeahhhh! Siiii MESSI! Thank you for being Argentine that player by diossss! Those who criticise him don't understand anything!"
But what about those that criticise you Lamela. Spurs fans will hope he proves them wrong next season.
