On this day: Rooney would be 'great success' at Arsenal; Mikel says 'its time to leave'

On the 20th June 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 20th June 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 20th June 2013…

Wenger to woo Roo

The day before they had 'finalised' a deal for Gonzalo Higuain and now Arsenal were being linked with spending big money on Wayne Rooney. Rooney was reportedly unhappy at Manchester United after a difficult end to the 2012-13 season.

And Arsenal's second-biggest shareholder Alisher Usmanov admitted the club might move for the England international.

"He is a great player, there would be great success for Rooney [if he joined Arsenal], and for Arsenal too."

Rooney ended up staying at United, signing a new deal later in the season. Arsenal did end up spending big, bringing in Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.

John gone

John Obi Mikel said he was leaving Chelsea. The Nigerian told Sabah:

"I have played at Chelsea for a long time and it’s now time for me to leave. I’m still only 26 and it’s great to receive an offer from a club [Galatasaray] playing Champions League football and doing well in the competition."

So he was all set to move to Turkey apparently. But he didn't, he stayed with Chelsea playing a bit-part role under Jose Mourinho.

Bald appointment

A year ago today and Franco Baldini started work as Tottenham's technical director. He went on to sign several big names. The likes of Paulinho, Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado and Etienne Capoue all arrived at the club. However, with the exception perhaps of Christian Eriksen, most of these deals have been duds.
