Switzerland 2-5 France: Newcastle midfielder on target

Switzerland Football Fan

Newcastle and France midfielder Moussa Sissoko scored as part of France's 5-2 demolition job over Switzerland.

Both sides started at each other in brave fashion but it didn’t take long for France to take a hold of the game and do a very professional job.

After 17 minutes France took the lead through a brilliant Olivier Giroud header that was just out of the goalkeepers reach despite making a good effort to get close. The television coverage had barely shown the last replay of the goal before Matuidi scored the next. In play time it had literally taken France 13 seconds, in real life it took just over a minute.

It’s safe to say Swizterland were more than shellshocked at this point and it was about to get worse. Ten minutes later Karim Benzema won a France penalty after being brought down in the box. Benzema stepped up to increase his World Cup tally to 3 but Benaglio saved down to his right, the rebound fell to Cabaye but he could only volley against the bar.

Switzerland were trying to get to half-time at 2-0 but Valbuena wouldn’t even let them do that, making it 3-0.

At half-time Switzerland tried to gather their thoughts and go back out to make a game of it. They seemed to have put France on hold, but this lasted only 20 minutes when Benzema finally got his goal. Scoring in bunches, Benzema teed up Newcastle’s Sissoko only 6 minutes later for him to slot in France’s 5th.

To save all embarrassment Switzerland did grab two consolation goals through Dzemaili and the second through Xhaka. The first a powerfully struck low free-kick into the corner and the second a brilliant volleyed finish first time.

France’s form has impressed a lot of people at this World Cup and they look a real threat to opposing teams. Switzerland still remain favourites to qualify as runners up.
