Ander Herrera is definitely staying at Athletic Bilbao next season.
Last summer Manchester United struggled in the transfer market and they missed out on many big targets. One player who slipped through the net was Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera. They had a third party apparently doing the negotiating for the Bilbao player and what ensued was a calamity.
Bilbao are notoriously difficult negotiators and the club were refusing to budge from the players €36 million buyout clause.
So Herrera stayed - and now it seems his decision was justified.
Athletic Bilbao have qualified for their first Champions League campaign in 16 years after an excellent La Liga campaign and Herrera played a key role in the side.
This week has seen the links with Manchester United return as the club are still in need of a technical midfielder. It may also have something to do with the fact his release clause goes up in ten days, from €36 million to €40 million.
His agent has been talking to the press this week, and has made it clear that Herrera is going nowhere this summer:
"There has been nothing new. There have been rumours all year, saying that United would try to sign him again this summer and even that Mourinho wanted him for Chelsea but we have not heard anything. Player is focused at Athletic and nothing else. Ander has been on holidays and he is just focused on the upcoming season with Athletic because he is very excited about playing Champions League with his team."
The likelihood is that United will not be after Herrera regardless of his faith to his home club. Herrera was a David Moyes target, and Louis van Gaal is likely to be after his own names this summer. The fact is Herrera will be a Bilbao player next season. Any rumours to the contrary from now on will certainly be pure fabrication.
