£25m Arsenal target Luiz Gustavo wants move, but Barcelona interested, can Gunners compete?

Luiz Gustavo

Arsenal face serious competition for Luiz Gustavo, who wants a move from Wolfsburg this summer.

Arsenal appeared close to signing Luiz Gustavo last summer, only to see the Brazilian opt to sign for Wolfsburg instead.

The midfielder decided switching to a club in a division he knew, where he would be guaranteed first team football, would be sensible for his World Cup prospects.

It has proved that way so far, starting both games for Brazil in the World Cup, where they remain undefeated.

He did have a £25 million release clause inserted in his contract however, and reportedly is keen on making a move to a bigger team this summer - and Barcelona are already interested.

Spanish paper Mundo Deportivo report: "Luiz Gustavo has directed his agent to look for a team with aspirations for the upcoming season."

Barcelona were interested last summer like Arsenal, but their need is not as urgent for a defensive midfielder as the Gunners.

With Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano in the team already, albeit the Argentine is used frequently as a defender, Arsenal may be able to tempt Gustavo with the prospects of better chances of first team football.

Monaco have also been suggested as a destination for him this week by Italian transfer expert Gianluca di Marzio, so Arsenal may have to make their mind up promptly whether to move for one of the best available defensive midfielders in world football.

Do Arsenal have a chance over Barcelona? Yes they certainly do, and they can thank Arsene Wenger for that.

He can offer Gustavo stability, unlike Barcelona who have had a revolving door of coaches over the past few seasons, in part through no fault of their own.

But with Luis Enrique a relatively inexperienced boss for such a stage, playing under him offers no guarantees like it would under Wenger at Arsenal.

The fact the Spaniards hold an interest tells you everything you need to know about the calibre of the midfielder, and Arsenal should act fast to compete and attempt to lure him to North London instead.
