Forest and Cardiff fans react to Medel and Jara's performances against Spain

Former Nottingham Forest defender Gonzalo Jara and Cardiff City man Gary Medel were the talk of Twitter as Chile beat World Cup holders Spain 2-0.

The former Nottingham Forest and Cardiff City stars played a huge part in what turned out to be a memorable night in South America as Chile defied the odds and knocked out 2010 World Cup champions Spain from the competition.

Although Spain were heavily defeated by the Netherlands in their World Cup opener, the general consensus before the match was that Del Bosque’s men would run rampant in Rio de Janeiro and put themselves in a good position to qualify for the knockout stage on Monday.

Nevertheless, the impressive Chilean national team were quick out of the blocks and put a tired looking Spain side to the sword and had Ramos and Co on the ropes early on in the game.

In the 19th minute of the match their bombardment on the Spain goal paid off when the Valencia attacker Eduardo Vargas intelligently committed Casillas to the floor and pocked the ball home from 10-yards.

The frustration in the Spain camp was clear to see and despite controlling the majority of the possession they struggled to really create many clear cut chances, largely due to the impressive Chilean defence.

When Aranguiz toe-poked the ball past the hapless Casillas just before half-time, the writing looked to be on the wall for Spain and a group-stage knockout seemed inevitable.

The resolute Chilean defence, which included Medel and Jara, earned the majority of the praise for the win against Spain, as well as the individual brilliance from the likes of Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez.
