Cristiano Ronaldo trains with his knee strapped at a Portugal training session - as the team prepare for United States clash.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo trained with his teammates ahead of their crucial Group G meeting with the United States amid growing fears within the camp about his fitness.

The Real Madrid man had pulled out of Wednesday's session early with the left knee injury he has been nursing, but he returned to train in full the next day.

Ronaldo was kept quiet throughout Portugal's opening game, a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Germany. This was certainly surprising to see from a player who usually excels on the big stage, and as a result speculation is rife that he is not 100 per cent fit.

After such a heavy defeat to Germany, Portugal almost certainly must win their remaining games to qualify for the knockout stages. Jurgen Klinsmann's USA side will be tough opponents, they beat Ghana in their opener, rallying from a second-half equaliser by the Africans to snatch victory late on.

Portugal midfielder Miguel Veloso stressed the need for his side to perform in their remaining "two finals".

"We still have two finals ahead of us and they depend only on us," he said. "We are thinking about the first final where we are going to play against the USA because it is not going to be an easy battle."

"We have to be ready because we know how important this game is and we want to win it for Portugal."

Portuguese centre-half Pepe will already be missing the United States clash after being sent off against Germany for a nonsensical headbutt on Thomas Muller. If Portugal are also without their captain, it is tough to see them getting the a result against Klinsnmann's well-drilled USA side.
