Louis van Gaal’s heart would have been in his mouth yesterday when Manchester United’s new boss saw left-back target Bruno Martins Indi go down after a challenge in the Netherlands game against Australia, before not getting up again.
The heavy fall following a challenge with former Everton star Tim Cahill has resulted in the left-back suffering a suspected concussion with further tests to examine the extent of his injury likely to take place today.
Needless to say LvG wasn’t at all pleased with the challenge and was snapped facing down Australia coach Ange Postecoglou as Martins Indi was carried off the pitch on a stretcher by medical staff.
United’s plans to sign a left-back this summer seem to be centred around a potential deal for Luke Shaw.
However, considering the likely immense fee it would take to get Shaw in through the door at Old Trafford, LvG is likely to have urged the club to consider alternatives in case a deal is too difficult.
One of those alternatives is definitely Martins Indi, someone LvG has shown a great deal of faith in at international level and someone who has forced Daley Blind to play slightly further forward.
If this injury for Martins Indi is a concussion then it shouldn’t affect United’s plans of signing him from Feyenoord but that should be confirmed at some point today.
