What started as a nervy affair soon started showing chances at either end. Uruguay started on the front foot earlier than England and showed signs of strength through Suarez. The Liverpool striker started shooting from corners which incidentally nearly caught Joe Hart out. England started showing signs of promise too, with England forcing lots of set pieces near Uruguay’s penalty box. Wayne Rooney went close with a free-kick and then hit the bar with a header from a Steven Gerrard corner.
Uruguay then took the lead through a deft cross from Cavani which landed perfectly on Suarez’s head, who made no mistake in guiding it past Joe Hart.
After half-time England took their time but then eventually stepped up a gear, Wayne Rooney had yet another chance when the ball broke to him on the 6-yard-box but hit it straight down the middle at Muslera, who made a comfortable save.
England finally got their break through, a great bit of skill from Daniel Sturridge released Glen Johnson who nipped past one before executing a fantastic ball past the keeper and the defender to Wayne Rooney who had an easy tap in.
They took the momentum forward and it looked for all the world that England would go on and win the game. This was until Muslera pumped the ball forward and Gerrard mistimed a header allowing Suarez to get in behind the defence, taking his step and then smashing it past Joe Hart.
England need Italy to beat both Costa Rica and Uruguay if England want to have any chance of qualifying.
