Germany's rearguard effort was much overlooked in their 4-0 demolition of Portugal as the attackers took the plaudits.
Yet their clean sheet against a Cristiano Ronaldo led attack deserved applauding, and it boded well for the rest of the tournament and their chances of winning the World Cup.
One man who knows a thing or two about lifting trophies is Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel, and he has had kind words for his countrymen.
Vettel is a fan of centre-back Per Mertesacker, and singles him out, rather than Mesut Ozil or Thomas Muller, as the key to the country's chances.
He told German news outlet ZDF: "Mertesacker is a rock in the waves.
"He always brings his power and never has a bad day.
"He brings so much order purely at the back. This is always important on the defensive (front)."

Mertesacker did not even have to be at his best against Portugal, but it is not just the statistics where he should be measured.
As Vettel point out, it is the organisation, experience, and reading of the game the Arsenal man brings to his teammates, that provides a strong foundation for the rest of the team to be successful which is so vital.
If Mertesacker and Germany did go onto win the World Cup, not a single Gooner would begrudge him his success, and the calls for him to be made captain would only increase.
