For the first hour of this game, very little happened. There were lots of half chances for both sides but the only real chance of the first half fell to Teofilo Gutirerrez after a brilliant James Rodriguez cross. However the River Plate forward could only scuff his volley wide instead of tucking away what was a relatively easy opportunity.
The game really came alive when Columbia’s Rodriguez powered in a header from a corner to send Colombian fans and players alike into pandemonium. They doubled their lead only 6 minutes later after a terrible defensive mistake lets in Gutierrez, at this point it’s three against two and Gutierrez lets in Juan Quintero to slot it past a hapless Barry.
At this point the game was well and truly alight and Gervinho produced a moment of individual brilliance. Skipping past 3 players into the box and then hammering it into the Colombia goal to set up an interesting last fifteen.
Ivory Coast hit them as hard they could but Colombia’s defence stayed solid and nearly countered and scored with a shot from the half way line.
Colombia will qualify tonight if Japan lose their game, Ivory Coast still remain favourites to go through.
