Analysis: Which Dutch United targets get the World Cup seal of approval?

The Netherlands have a host of players who have found themselves linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks. How is each faring in Brazil?

The summer World Cup has turned out to be a walk in the park for incoming Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal, thus far. Two matches into the tournament and the Netherland’s head coach has seen his side win six points, whilst scoring a total of eight goals.

Success with the Netherland’s will have given the 62-year-old plenty to mull over. With a number of relatively unknown faces challenging the world’s best, on the most difficult stage, one would imagine he is watching his players with the view of a potential swoop on his return to club football.

Van Gaal will rightfully tell the press that he is entirely focused on the World Cup, but this is likely to be false. Truth be told, he must have one eye on potential transfer targets as he makes preparations for his arrival at Old Trafford.

With a number of the Dutch players linked with a move to the Premier League and Manchester United, here’s a look at the current crop of stars who are likely to have made the greatest impression.

The Netherlands starlet increased his stock at the weekend after starring in the 5-1 thrashing of defending champions Spain, bagging his first international goal in the process.

He has accumulated 123 touches since the beginning of the tournament, proving his ability at the back with two impressive performances. He has won six tackles, four interceptions and made eight clearances in total.

Ron Vlaar - Aston Villa

Ron Vlaar has proven himself as a dependable option at the heart of Van Gaal's five man defence. The Aston Villa central defender particularly impressed during his performance against Spain, in which he did brilliantly to quash the threat of La Liga winner Diego Costa. 

Sceptics may have judged the Aston Villa captain prior to the summer tournament, however his performances for the Netherlands could well have changed these opinions.

Memphis Depay's arrival versus Australia turned the match around in favor of the the Netherlands. At 2-1 dow, the 20-year-old assisted the equalizer and single-handedly put Oranje in the lead with a long-range effort from outside of the box.

He has experienced just 45 minutes of World Cup action at this stage, but after an impressive debut display expect him to be utilised more often in the latter stages of the tournament.  

Daryl Janmaat - Feyenoord

Daryl Janmaat has earned a number of plaudits since the World Cup kicked-off, mainly due to his energy on the right-side of defence. He starred in his side's opening victory over Spain, causing huge problems for Jordi Alba with his bursting runs up and down the flank. 

The Feyenoord-man has played one key pass, thus far, whilst contributing with a further six interceptions, five clearances and five tackles. He has also completed 100% of his attempted dribbles.

Bruno Martins Indi - Feyenoord

The Netherlands saw team saw central defender Bruno Martins Indi taken off the field in the first half against Australia. He was headbutted in the Dutch team's opener against Spain by Diego Costa, and now he finds himself sidelined with concussion.

Whilst he could miss the final group stage match, his eventful performances will have earned him a number of plaudits. At this stage, he has completed two interceptions, two clearances and made one block. He has also found success in 88% of his attempted passes.

Daley Blind – Ajax

Daley Blind has been the cream-of-the-crop for the Dutch. Occupying the left wing-back role, he has performed tremendously throughout his side’s group openers, excelling in both halves of the pitch.

At this stage of the tournament, he is his country’s most creative asset, having fashioned six goal scoring chances and assisting three goals – in fact, he is currently the competition’s leading playmaker.

The 24-year-old has taken an impressive 136 touches (more than any other Dutchman) and he has contributed with six tackles, three interceptions and three clearances
