Could Matt Macey be a future Arsenal number one goalkeeper?
Arsenal are currently facing something of a goalkeeping crisis. At the end of last term they had the likes of Emiliano Viviano and Lukasz Fabianski supporting number one Wojciech Szczesny.
Both are now gone, the former went home to Palermo while the latter joined Swansea City on a free transfer. they also let Deyan Iliev join KV Mechelen.
It means they are short of top quality stoppers. Damian Martinez returns from his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday and they are also being linked with a number of different stoppers from around the globe.
However, what about one of their youngsters, an English one at that. The Gunners pipped Everton to giant teenager Matt Macey of Bristol Rovers last summer.
He has since gone on to have a great first campaign at the club - establishing himself as the number one choice for the team's under-21 side.
And he has been talking about his first year in an interview with the official website today, saying:
"It’s been a brilliant season. It’s been exciting but a bit of a whirlwind as well. I’ve settled in quite quickly and enjoyed so much of it. I can’t remember having a bad day in the last year, which is a good sign..."Playing regularly for the under-21s was always the aim when I first came here... I speak a lot with the goalkeeping coaches because it’s a specific position. I talk to Gerry Peyton and Tony Roberts and they give me feedback on how I’m doing. They’re happy with how I’ve done this season so I just need to build on that for next year."
First-team football is certainly not on the radar for the player next season - it is still far too early for this talented starlet to achieve his destiny. But it is good to know that Arsenal have yet another homegrown talent, level-headed despite his ability, waiting in the wings for his big shot.
